Prospects who already work with a financial professional are not necessarily unavailable. In many cases, they simply need help understanding that retirement planning has multiple moving parts, including market assets, income planning, taxes, insurance protection, health coverage, long-term care, and legacy goals.
If you’re and insurance and/or annuity advisor, the most productive response is not to criticize the existing relationship or pretend to offer identical services. Instead, acknowledge the value of that relationship, identify the areas already being handled, and open a broader conversation about the retirement issues that may still need attention.
This approach is especially useful when discussing fixed indexed annuities and other protection-focused strategies. A competitive product can create interest, but a client-centered planning conversation is what establishes long-term relevance.
Why “I Already Have a Financial Advisor” Is Not a Dead End
When a prospect says they already have a financial advisor, they are usually communicating one of several things:
- They are satisfied with their existing relationship.
- They want to avoid a high-pressure sales conversation.
- They assume all financial professionals offer the same services.
- They have not considered whether every retirement need is being addressed.
The wrong response is to immediately challenge the competence or motives of the other professional. Even if a prospect has concerns about market exposure, mutual funds, fees, or communication, attacking the person they’ve selected can make the prospect defensive.
It can also create an unnecessary choice: keep the current advisor or work with someone new. That framing makes it harder to earn a productive first conversation.
A stronger strategy is to position the existing advisor as one part of the prospect’s financial picture. The prospect may have someone managing investments while still needing a discussion about protected income, asset allocation by purpose, insurance needs, estate considerations, health-related costs, or tax-sensitive retirement decisions.
The Better Positioning: Expand the Financial Picture
A useful starting point is to validate the prospect’s existing planning relationship. This lowers resistance and makes clear that the goal is not to force the prospect to abandon a trusted professional.
From there, shift the discussion from who manages the money to what needs to be planned for. A retirement plan is broader than one investment account or one product category.
Use discovery questions instead of comparisons. Ask questions that reveal priorities, timing, and potential gaps. For example:
- What are your expected retirement dates and income needs?
- Which assets are intended for long-term growth, and which are intended to support near-term income?
- How much market volatility are you comfortable with as retirement approaches?
- Have you discussed taxes and the timing of withdrawals?
- What health coverage and long-term care concerns should be included in the plan?
- What would you like to leave to family members, charities, or other beneficiaries?
- Are there estate planning documents, trusts, land, or legacy wishes that should be coordinated?
These questions do not assume the other advisor has failed to address anything. They simply give the prospect room to evaluate whether every important topic has been considered.
That distinction matters. The advisor’s role becomes complementary: helping the prospect examine areas outside the part of the financial picture that is already being managed.
